RSSI/BSSID/SSID Measurements

Introduction

Our ByteBlower GUI from 2.16.2 onwards offers RSSI/BSSID/SSID measurements as standard in the HTML ByteBlower report.

This is great news for our Wireless Endpoint users!

So, how can we take advantage of this new feature? → Roaming tests

As users of wireless devices are often on the move, it is useful to be able to see how this affects the signal strength of the Wifi and how it varies when moving from one access point to another. This is the case when moving around an office for example.

Example GUI Project

In this project, we have 3 WEP devices that are connected to the meeting point and will receive downstream UDP traffic.

The WEP's are:

  • Windows 10 laptop
  • Android mobile device (Galaxy S20)
  • IOS mobile device (iPhone 13)

Setting up the Test

  • 4 ports are created in the port tab.
  • 1 for a "server"
  • 3 ports corresponding to the 3 WEP devices.

Create a Frame

  • We use the default frame size for this demonstration.

Create a Frameblasting Flow

  • In this example, we have a speed of 0.5 Mbps

Create a Flow

  • The test is configured to send DS traffic from the server to the 3 WEP devices.

Create a Scenario

  • The last step is to create a scenario. In this example, we send all flows at the same time for 1 minute.

RSSI/BSSID/SSID Results in the ByteBlower Report

  • When you open the ByteBlower report and scroll down, the first results that you will see are the RSSI/SSID/BSSID graphs.

Limitations

When using iOS or iPadOS, you will not see any RSSI values as this is a company policy from Apple. However, you will still be able to see the SSID/BSSID information.
